DFSME October Shining Light Awardee is Lawrence Kelly, Special Education Math Teacher
Mr. Larry Kelly teaches algebra and “senior math” class, which focuses on real-world applications of math such as banking, budgeting, and taxes. Mr. Kelly is nothing short of an exceptional educator, building great rapport with McKean High School’s neediest students. He helps students with math-anxiety achieve increased self-esteem in not only math, but with a sense of accomplishment when understanding new concepts. That sense of achievement carries over into other areas as students begin to feel like they are capable in many more ways.
In Mr. Kelly’s senior math class, he teaches important money-management skills related to math so students have a realistic understanding of how money works in the real-world. This helps students make wise decisions when accepting jobs and salary offerings with realistic expectations of pay. He also provides students with the understanding of how people need to work together and be collaborative to be successful in the working world.
Mr. Kelly was nominated by Lindsay Williams, Red Clay Consolidated School District.
