Bioproduction is a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary field that combines biotechnology, engineering, and chemistry to sustainably and efficiently produce biological materials such as therapeutic proteins, vaccines, biofuels, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy sources, and agricultural products. Our Bioproduction (BIP) program provides an understanding of the entire process from the fundamentals of microbiology and biotechnology to advanced techniques in fermentation, cell culture, and downstream processing. Hands-on lab experiences and research projects give students practical expertise in optimizing production methods and ensuring product quality and safety. The program prepares students for diverse career pathways in industries such as biotechnology, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, environmental science, and renewable energy. Graduates may also choose to continue their education at a four-year institution.

Educators exploring the program will have the opportunity to tour our science labs, including our clean room used for cell culture, and work with real-world equipment such as inverted microscopes, spectrophotometers, nano-drops, chromatography systems, bioreactors, and ELISA. Our mission is to prepare the next generation of scientists and build a talent pipeline that carries students from the classroom to the lab bench, equipping them with support, skills, and confidence in complex topics like CRISPR. This commitment led to the creation of a Learning Lab, where students come on site to use CRISPR in a controlled lab setting, build their familiarity with CRISPR concepts, and learn about career pathways in the field from scientists. Learn about habitat management and citizen science programs conducted at the Delaware Nature Society’s Ashland Nature Center. Walk about a mile with hills, learn about ecological management of mature woodlands, meadows, and reforestation areas along Red Clay Creek. Visit an active Hawk Watch to learn about data collected as we try to observe raptors flying south for the winter. Through Delaware Nature Society’s nearly 50 year effort to manage habitats at Ashland, see how the land has changed, learn about how we mitigate problems such as invasive species, and maintain these lands for biodiversity. End the walk at the Hawk Watch to observe migration in action and learn about this nearly 20-year project.

Do you know what happens to your trash or recycling once it’s taken away? Not many people do! Come take an exclusive tour through the Delaware Recycling Center’s Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) where all single stream recyclables are sorted and processed. Then take a drive around Cherry Island Landfill to learn the truth about landfills and how they are the safest, most cost effective way to manage waste! In addition to the tours you’ll spend time at our New Castle Environmental Education Building where you’ll learn how and what to recycle and even practice sorting on our mock conveyor belt! We’ll also demonstrate the lessons we use to teach Delaware students the importance of managing waste in order to protect people and the environment.

By studying our past we can guide our future, that is the educational experience that awaits educators at the beautiful Auburn Valley State Park. This joint mini program sampler and experience is a joint session hosted by Delaware State Parks and the Marshall Steam Museum. Educators will get to explore a Victorian mansion through the lens of simple machines in every day inventions, and walk through the world’s largest collection of operating steam powered cars. Hike around an industrial ruin on scenic trails and get a sampler of the programs offered at this state park and in all of the state parks.

  1. Explore the map of all STEM ConnectED Day sessions (opens in new window) to locate host organizations near you. If you’ll be attending morning & afternoon sessions make sure they are 1 hour or less away from each other.
  2. Check the Program Guide on this page for details about host organizations — find sessions that align with your interests. There are many hidden gems so venture out and try something new!
  3. Verify that your school and district will allow you to participate in STEM ConnectED Day.
  4. Scroll to the registration section and register and get your STEM ConnectED Day tickets.
  5. Register in PDMS (using the Delaware Department of Education EdAccess system) for course #43928. If you’re attending the morning session register for #90277, and the afternoon session is #90278.
  6. Check your email for for the STEM ConnectED Day tickets. The bottom of your ticket has the address, parking information, safety information, security requirements, and accessibility guidelines for each session. Follow all guidelines (including clothing and shoe requirements) to ensure you can get the most out of STEM ConnectED Day.
  7. On STEM ConnectED Day (October 10th) make sure to arrive at your morning session by 8:30 AM, and your afternoon session by 12:30 PM.
  8. Sign the attendance sheet at your session(s) to get credit and enjoy your STEM ConnectED Day session(s)!
  9. Fill out the survey sent to your email after the session is complete and let DFSME know about your experiences.
